How do I know what roles are available to apply for?

When you’re applying online to work at one of our stores, you’re applying to work with the Overwaitea Food Group.  Overwaitea Food Group is much larger than you may imagine.  It is actually made up of over 115 stores across British Columbia and Alberta under various banners consisting of Save-On-Foods, Urban Fare, PriceSmart Foods, Overwaitea Foods, and Cooper’s Foods. Based on your online application, our Recruiters will do their best to find a perfect match between what job you’re looking for and what our stores in your area have available. This means a Recruiter may consider you for a role at a different store than the one you applied for (but within a reasonable commuting distance)... because it could be a great fit for you! I don’t know what department to apply for – I have no previous experience working in a grocery store!

No need to worry – we believe in hiring for attitude and training for skill! For the majority of our roles, we provide all the training someone needs to succeed. Unless we’re looking to fill a very specific skill set in a role, we will consider anyone with the right attitude and willingness to learn!  You will have a six hour Orientation session on your first day followed by role specific training during your first weeks on the team. I am currently in school, can I work part time?

Absolutely! Our stores would have a tough time operating if it weren’t for the involvement of our part time team members. Our part time shifts can range anywhere from 4 to 40 hours/week. They can be at various times during the day.  In case you can only work week nights, most of our week night shifts start between 4:00 and 6:00pm and end between 10:00pm and Midnight; we are always looking for people wanting to work on weekends! What is the minimum age requirement for employment?

Unfortunately, you have to be 15 or older to work at one of our stores. If you aren’t quite 15 years old yet, hang in there and keep us in mind once you’ve had your 15th birthday, we would love to hear from you then! Back to Top

What can I expect after I apply online?

At Overwaitea, we pride ourselves on offering a great candidate experience! Once you have applied online (don’t forget to upload your resume!) you can expect to hear from a member of our Recruiting team within two weeks at most. You can look forward to hearing from us either by way of an email or phone call about a specific role that could be a good fit for you.  At that time we will then schedule/conduct a brief phone interview to ensure you are the perfect fit. Once we have chatted with you over the phone (and have found the perfect job for you!) we will pass your resume and application over to the Hiring Manager at the store you want to work at to schedule an in-person interview! Do I have to wear a uniform...and PAY for it?

There is a uniform or mandatory dress code for all of the jobs in our stores but the good news is you won’t have to pay for it all (we help pay for some of the uniforms). If you have any questions about uniforms or want to know what you will be wearing for the role you have applied for, feel free to ask our Store Manager when you are interviewed in store. Back to Top

I just moved to Canada, will I be eligible to work at one of the stores?

We love having a diverse team! As long as you are 100% eligible to work in Canada with a valid Social Insurance Number, we can consider you to work at one of our stores.  Based on our customer service focus, we do require that a candidate be able to converse and understand Basic English in order to be considered for one of our stores. I am visiting Canada from another country. Can I apply for a short term position?

Absolutely! Several of our stores will consider part time, temporary team members as long as you have a full Canadian work permit or visa and plan on staying in the city where the store is located in for a minimum of six months. Back to Top

Is there a probation period once I’m hired to work at a store?

Yes, we have a probation period once you become employed. However, depending on which banner (e.g. Save On Foods, Urban Fare, etc.) you are employed by, the length of your probation period will be different.  You can ask the manager you interview with in-store for all the details. Back to Top

How much notice of my work schedule will I have once I hired?

Our stores create their work schedules with plenty of time to spare.  So, you will have ample notice of your work schedule so you can plan your activities.  Once you are hired your manager will give you a set explanation of the exact day the schedules are printed for your store so you know when you can start to review them. I’m a stay at home parent and need to be home in the morning and afternoons to be with my kids. Are there any opportunities for someone with my 9 am – 3 pm availability?

We try to offer flexible, accommodating work hours to all our team members. On occasion we do have shifts in our stores that will match your 9 am – 3 pm availability but unfortunately they are rare! The best thing to do is apply online and be honest when asked which days/times you can work.  If you have prior commitments we have a text box where you can put them in.  Then, one of our recruiters will then touch base with you when they have a role available that will match your availability and interest!   Back to Top
